CHAIRMAN’S REPORT
Membership of the Council of the Australian Institute of Quarrying Education Foundation (AIQEF) consisted this year of Graeme Martin, Syd Hill, Greg Goodsir, Danny Duke, John Malempre, Dugald Gray, David Cilento and Dennis Staley.
The Council wishes to acknowledge the considerable contribution made to the Foundation by the late Syd Hill for many years prior to his death in late 2009.

While the actual outlay is above that of the previous year, there were also unpaid accounts at the end of the financial year for a number of IQA seminars ($19,655), IQA projects ($19,231) and PDP resources ($24,600) which had been delayed pending appropriate invoicing.
Apart from support for various IQA Branch educational initiatives related to the organisation of seminars, the Foundation again contributed to the direct employment costs of the IQA’s Education Officer providing a real commitment to educational opportunities available to the industry as a whole.
Allied with this support for the Education Officer were continued contributions towards resources for the industry’s new Training Package (RII09) – development of electrical awareness material for on-going professional development and assessment tools for use by RTOs. Development of resources such as these represents continued expenditure to support the IQA’s Professional Development Program, thereby providing industry personnel with targeted education opportunities from seminars, workshops and technical papers.
The funding for Foundation sponsored initiatives continues to come from the Foundation’s accumulated funds, supplemented by contributions from its supporters, mainly members of the IQA Industry Suppliers group. Of particular note is the continuing contribution from Maxam through sponsorship of the annual Auction which this year raised just over $26,000.
The Foundation’s funds are managed through a tax exempt charitable trust where the strategy is to achieve dividends and growth over the medium to long term and provide a significant level of security. Several term deposits & income securities yield short term accessible funds, allowing flexibility to reach money to pay for the many funding applications.
The position for the Foundation remains sound, with some applications for funding being submitted by organisations and individuals outside the direct auspices of The Institute of Quarrying Australia, but all complying with the essential requirement of a basis in education and training.
The AIQEF web site continues to operate satisfactorily, offering greater transparency of the Foundation’s activities and easier access to funding applications, through on-line forms, guidelines and examples of successful past submissions.
I thank the Councillors who have given freely of their time to attend meetings and provide advice on matters of concern to the Foundation. I also commend the work of the Honorary Secretary/Treasurer, Carl Berglin, who continues to ensure that Councillors have appropriate information at their disposal.
